Climate Change – A Sign of the Changing Times
Climate change or global warming is a major issue in today’s world but it only accounts for part of the damage being done to the environment currently. This damage will dramatically change the way the planet is able for provide for its inhabitants especially in the future. As a matter of fact, climate change isn’t actually the problem but a symptom of two far more important problems.
The first problem is the vast amount of the Earth’s natural resources that humans are currently consuming. This is a very large number especially in advancing economic countries. The second problem is that the waste from resource consumption spills into the Earth’s land and atmosphere and pollutes it. When we put those two problems together over a long period of time they will start to have a domino effect. These problems contribute to the Earth’s climate change leading to regional food and water shortages, which of course have their own environmental impacts. Luckily, humanity and more importantly each individual is capable of taking small steps every day to make the Earth a healthier place.
A great way to understand your impact on the Earth is to measure your ecological footprint. This is defined as the land and water needed to support your consumption of goods and resources. Basically think of it as the amount of land needed to farm your food and water, generate your electricity, transport your goods and hold your waste. Your carbon footprint is a small section of your ecological footprint and it measures the carbon dioxide created by the things you do and the products you buy. You make decisions every day that impact the Earth. We need to start thinking about the impact of these decisions and lower our every day ecological and carbon footprint.
