Arctic river deltas may hold clues to future global climate

Scientists struggling to understand how Earth’s climate will change in the next few decades have neglected a potential treasure trove of information—sediments deposited in the ocean by major Arctic rivers such as the Colville and Mackenzie rivers—according to geoscientists at The University of Texas at Austin and Texas A&M University.
The researchers’ study was published in the May 19 edition of Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
Sediments deposited in large river deltas around the world record information about past sea level, productivity and storminess on the ocean margin, climate on the adjacent continents (including temperatures and precipitation) and human factors that affect sediment delivery to the margin (such as dams and levees), among other things. …

Climate change to spur rapid shifts in wildfire hotspots

Climate change will bring about major shifts in worldwide fire patterns, and those changes are coming fast, according to a first-of-its-kind analysis led by researchers at the University of California, Berkeley, in collaboration with scientists at Texas Tech University.
The findings are reported in the April 8 issue of PLoS ONE, an open-access, peer-reviewed journal of the Public Library of Science.
Researchers used thermal-infrared sensor data obtained between 1996 and 2006 from European Space Agency satellites in their study of pyrogeography – the distribution and behavior of wildfire – on a global scale. They not only got a global view of where wildfires occur, but they determined the common environmental characteristics associated with the risk of those …

Saving Energy In The Winter

Whether you like it or not and whether you come prepared or not, winter is coming. So better not sit on your couch and wait for it to come like a dooms day, move and be prepared!
Winter means one thing: cold air. But for those who are conscious enough to notice, winter means larger electric bills. Yes, it is true. Aside from summer, winter is the season of the year where your electric bills skyrocket to digits that cost you financial burden. Why? Because we need to warm our home. Our home should have the right temperature to give us comfort. And the modern way to do it is by turning on our heating system. …

Bosch: Groundbreaking Ceremony for New Solar Production Facility

1,100 new jobs at ersol
Investment of 530 million euros in Arnstadt
· Ceremony attended by Federal Chancellor Merkel and Thuringian Deputy Minister President Diezel
· Manufacturing capacity to be tripled
· Bosch placing energy technology at the focus of its long-term strategy
At a groundbreaking ceremony in Arnstadt, Germany, attended by Federal Chancellor Angela Merkel, the Bosch Group has begun the expansion of its solar production, setting up a new manufacturing facility for crystalline solar cells and modules. “This investment is part of our increasing activities in renewable energies. These energies are increasingly gaining in significance, and will be integral to the energy mix of the future. Bosch recognized this at an early stage, and is already a major …

Eco-friendly power generation – Siemens develops CO2 capture technology for combined cycle power plants

Siemens Energy is to adapt its proprietary process for carbon dioxide capture to the special conditions prevalent in and mode of operation of combined-cycle power plants for the Norwegian utility Statkraft. The project kicked off in January 2009 and is scheduled to be completed within two years. This technology will then be available for industrial-scale applications.
Fossil energy will remain the cornerstone of power generation for the foreseeable future. The task to be performed here is to meet increasing energy demand while simultaneously protecting our environment. “Technical innovations are the most important lever for combating climate change effectively,” said Michael Suess, CEO of the Fossil Power Generation Division of Siemens Energy. Siemens is already working on …

As planet warms, poor nations face economic chill

Climate change may widen gap between rich and poor, study finds
A rising tide is said to lift all boats. Rising global temperatures, however, may lead to increased disparities between rich and poor countries, according to a recent MIT economic analysis of the impact of climate change on growth.
After examining worldwide climate and economic data from 1950 to 2003, Benjamin A. Olken, associate professor in the Department of Economics, concludes that a 1 degree Celsius rise in temperature in a given year reduces economic growth by an average of 1.1 percentage points in the world’s poor countries but has no measurable effect in rich countries.
Olken says his research suggests higher temperatures will be disproportionately bad for …

Solar Technology Pros & Cons

Sun power is one of the best and most effective renewable energy sources available. The problem most novice environmental warriors find is that the price of professionally installed solar power systems is way beyond their budget and it could take well over 10 years to see a return on their investment. Never fear, there are alternatives. The most cost-effective way to take advantage of a solar system is the construction of solar panels on your own. What you need is instructions to build a solar panel!
Too difficult? If you are scared it would be difficult, it is just not true. It is not difficult to build solar panels with the proper instructions. Easy enough for …
